On January 15, 2024, Nauru announced that it had recognized the one-China principle and cut ties with the authorities of the Taiwan region. Nauruan Foreign Minister Lionel Aingimea, also the country’s former president, spoke to CMG about the decision. He said that the decision was based on the country’s national interest and its desire to strengthen ties with China. The decision to adhere to the one-China principle is on the right side of history, he added.
