Exclusive with Nauruan FM Lionel Aingimea
On January 15, this tiny island nation in the Pacific severed its relations with the Taiwan region. On January 24, it re-established ties with China, recognizing that there is only one China in the world. The government of the People’s Republic of China is acknowledged as the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is considered an inalienable part of China’s territory. In this edition of Leaders Talk, CMG’s Zou Yun sat down with Nauru’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Lionel Aingimea, in Beijing to discuss the rationale behind Nauru’s recognition of the one-China principle. How will both countries cooperate and deepen mutual understanding? What solutions can China provide to tackle pressing developmental and environmental issues in Nauru? Aingimea also extols the charm and beauty of his native island and looks at the enormous commercial potential for its fisheries and port industry.
